Inside almost every product on the shelf today you can find art.

Every gear, hinge, screw, wire, and resistor within those units on the shelf all come together to form a fully functional machine. Sometimes the parts number in the hundreds. Sometimes there are thousands.

These parts are often known only for what they do and the purpose they serve. The words internal flange and PCB sub screw might not mean much to you or even sound the least bit exciting, but if you simply take them out of the context - far removed from their one task in a complex machine, one can find the beauty that lies in their form as well as their function.

Literally. Take away the p in "part", and you get "art".

I chose to disassemble a Polaroid 600 camera, because of it's recognizable purpose and simple exterior that hid a supremely complex network of moving parts. There weren't any electronic sensors, memory chips, or LCD displays to be found. Every piece of plastic and shred of metal had a specific and finite physical job in order to make the magic happen.

Push button. Take photo. Print image.

So next time you look at a well designed product, think about the inside. It's just as pretty in there too.

I learned a lot about trial and error. And I also learned to take better photos of your product before you leave the country.

While studying at Hong Kong Polytechnic, our group was tasked with designing a product that was made from the leftover banners from the Beijing Olympics.

The product also had to utilize the sewing skills of the Hong Kong Women's Workers, a local group devoted to finding work for women whose industry job had left Hong Kong.

Inspired by the small spaces in typical Hong Kong homes and outdoors, we developed a folding chair that could provide seating but could also be tucked away when not in use.

The form was inspired by traditional origami folding techniques.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/ROUND-campaign-title.jpg" width="670" height="47" width_o="670" height_o="47" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/ROUND-campaign-title_o.jpg" data-mid="10134434" border="0" align="left"/>
I learned what it's like to take an STD test.

Once I got beyond the fact that I hate needles, I began to notice that there is no truly unified system to promote safe sex and STD testing.

In fact, there isn't really a system at all. Safe sex education and access is disjointed and varies from city to city, and state to state. This is a design project that was developed during my time at The Ohio State University.

ROUND is one easily accessible, nationally recognized, and fully coordinated brand system that makes safer sex more relevant and convenient.

Step 1: Rethink Condom Sales
Small plastic "single night" kits would provide all you need for a safe night out, including 2 condoms (one always breaks), instructions/text hotline, and lubricant. The condoms themselves would have round packaging with a pull tab to make them easier to open and to differentiate from other brands.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/sexkit.jpg" width="670" height="520" width_o="2048" height_o="1589" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/sexkit_o.jpg" data-mid="10115015" border="0" align="left"/>

Step 2: Advertise the System
By developing a brand, and then telling the world, ROUND would gain interest and encourage the world to get tested and practice safe sex.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/STDad2.jpg" width="670" height="444" width_o="800" height_o="531" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/STDad2_o.jpg" data-mid="10115018" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/STDad1.jpg" width="670" height="444" width_o="800" height_o="531" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/STDad1_o.jpg" data-mid="10115016" border="0" align="left"/>

Step 3: Provide Incentive Card for Testing
At participating testing centers, incentive cards will be given to patrons who pass STD tests. These cards act as a certification that you have been tested, but more importantly they come preloaded with points that can be redeemed for free condoms and Safe Sex Kits at participating stores.

Cards can only be reloaded with points following a new STD test. Assuming you are sexually active, you have the possibility to receive free condoms forever. That's a pretty sweet deal.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/Round-Card.jpg" width="670" height="500" width_o="670" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/Round-Card_o.jpg" data-mid="10114987" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/Testing.jpg" width="670" height="444" width_o="741" height_o="492" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/Testing_o.jpg" data-mid="10114965" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/Medicine-and-card.jpg" width="670" height="381" width_o="670" height_o="381" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/Medicine-and-card_o.jpg" data-mid="10114986" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/Register.jpg" width="670" height="500" width_o="670" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/Register_o.jpg" data-mid="10114992" border="0" align="left"/>

Step 4: Increase Access to Contraceptives
Forget the slightly shady excuses for a condom dispensers in current bar bathrooms. Instead, ROUND contraceptive dispensers would replace them. The clean and recognizable design would increase brand recognition, and most importantly the machine would accept GO ROUND incentive cards, in addition to cash and credit cards, in return for branded Safe Sex Kits and Condoms.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/Slide-Card.jpg" width="670" height="500" width_o="670" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/Slide-Card_o.jpg" data-mid="10114991" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/Bathroom-Scene.jpg" width="670" height="840" width_o="670" height_o="840" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/2033527/Bathroom-Scene_o.jpg" data-mid="10137087" border="0" align="left"/>

I learned that filling out timesheets is not something that I want to do. And apparently there are many people at Wieden+Kennedy who share my opinion.

They're a burden, they take time, and they're inconvenient. But they are also necessary.

So when the CFO of Wieden+Kennedy came to WK12 to help fix this problem, we knew we had to do something drastic.

We decided to make not doing your timesheets more inconvenient than actually doing them.

Role: Designer, Thinker

The Idea
W+K has a lot of conveniences that are taken for granted. So for every timesheet period that the agency does not meet 85% completion, these conveniences would be taken away until they did. Unfortunately, this campaign was never activated and people still don't do their timesheets.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1999868/HEUER_timesheets_sign800_01_800.jpg" width="670" height="374" width_o="800" height_o="447" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1999868/HEUER_timesheets_sign800_01_800_o.jpg" data-mid="10057824" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1999868/HEUER_timesheets-coffee_800_01_800.jpg" width="670" height="331" width_o="800" height_o="396" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1999868/HEUER_timesheets-coffee_800_01_800_o.jpg" data-mid="10057825" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1999868/HEUER_timesheets_catwalk800_01_800.jpg" width="670" height="293" width_o="800" height_o="351" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1999868/HEUER_timesheets_catwalk800_01_800_o.jpg" data-mid="10057823" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1999868/HEUER_timesheets-elevator_800_01_800.jpg" width="670" height="401" width_o="800" height_o="479" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1999868/HEUER_timesheets-elevator_800_01_800_o.jpg" data-mid="10057826" border="0" align="left"/>

We would force pop-ups on everyone's computer the day timesheets are due.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1999868/HEUER_timesheets-web_800_01_800.jpg" width="670" height="422" width_o="800" height_o="505" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1999868/HEUER_timesheets-web_800_01_800_o.jpg" data-mid="10057827" border="0" align="left"/>

Email Listserv
The timesheet problem, like most problems, has more than one solution.

So in addition to inconveniences, we decided to find a way to make it more convenient to fill out timesheets and keep track of numbers. The solution relied on a simple email.

At the end of each day, each employee would be sent an tailored email prompting them to respond with their hours worked. Every email includes a new trivia question to maintain interest throughout the period.

At the end of the 15 day timesheet period, all the employee would have to do is search their email inbox and all their work history will be there, thus making it easier to maintain more accurate numbers without doing anymore than answering an email.

earned that pie can solve a lot of the world's problems, especially when it is tossed in someone’s face.

In addition to the yearly pie-off competition, WK12 decided to hold a pie toss for charity. Employees could bid, auction style, to have the opportunity to throw pie at some of the agency celebrities, directors, or pains in the ass and really let 'em have it. The agency matched all the proceeds.

The result was over $13,000 donated to the Portland Rescue Mission and a fun new addition to an already popular annual event.

I learned that the written story is what has helped make America, America.

Wordstock, the largest annual NW literary festival, needed a campaign to fit their 2011 theme of America.

As art director, I developed this concept to accompany our group’s idea that "Words Make America." Each poster represented a different book and author that would be featured at the festival.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998064/Poster1.jpg" width="670" height="1038" width_o="670" height_o="1038" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998064/Poster1_o.jpg" data-mid="9926228" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998064/poster8.jpg" width="670" height="1038" width_o="670" height_o="1038" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998064/poster8_o.jpg" data-mid="9928332" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998064/Poster-7.jpg" width="670" height="1038" width_o="670" height_o="1038" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998064/Poster-7_o.jpg" data-mid="9928288" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998064/Poster4.jpg" width="670" height="1038" width_o="670" height_o="1038" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998064/Poster4_o.jpg" data-mid="9926964" border="0" align="left"/>

When a local start-up company came to WK12 with a new baby bottle holder, we immediately knew that this would be a fun project.

With their first trade show around the corner, we were tasked with giving the Original Ba an eye-catching look that would be certain to draw eyes amidst a sea of other baby products.

The solution was staring us right in the face like two large,well, boobs.

As a project manager and account executive on this project, I learned first hand that nobody likes to be told what to do, yet at some point almost everyone needs to be told what to do.

The Look
<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998056/BA_1.jpg" width="670" height="517" width_o="800" height_o="618" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998056/BA_1_o.jpg" data-mid="10050719" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998056/ba2_800.jpg" width="670" height="516" width_o="800" height_o="617" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998056/ba2_800_o.jpg" data-mid="10251370" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998056/BA_3.jpg" width="670" height="517" width_o="800" height_o="618" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998056/BA_3_o.jpg" data-mid="10050724" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998056/BA_4.jpg" width="670" height="517" width_o="800" height_o="618" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998056/BA_4_o.jpg" data-mid="10050726" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998056/BA_5.jpg" width="670" height="517" width_o="800" height_o="618" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1998056/BA_5_o.jpg" data-mid="10050730" border="0" align="left"/>

Influencer Kit
We designed an influencer kit that was sent to high profile media members that would be attending the trade show.

The Trade Show Booth
We helped them design and plan the interior of their 10'X10' booth at the show. We matched the look to the original campaign, and created a fun, modern environment, complete with working claw machine filled with easy to grab Ba's. After all, if a claw machine can grab a Ba, so can a baby.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1958999/Duo_title.jpg" width="670" height="47" width_o="670" height_o="47" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/57942/1958999/Duo_title_o.jpg" data-mid="9924284" border="0" align="left"/>
I learned that when it comes to bags, people can be very picky. And being picky sometimes means changing preferences. And changing preferences means a lot of discarded bags.

My solution was Duo.

Duo is a bag concept that increases the usable life of one bag by marrying the form and functionality of both a messenger bag, and a backpack, all while keeping an eye on good ol’ mother earth.

Duo can fold flat, just like a box, to increase shipping volume, and it is made from scrap awning vinyl, tent nylon, and car seatbelts. The result is a very durable concept that makes choosing a bag easy even for the most indecisive people.

I learned that even if you lose, it still doesn't get old to see your work posted online.

For the 10th Anniversary of their Model 10 radio, Tivoli Audio held a competition to design a billboard to commemorate the occasion.

The competition was held through designboom.com, and the winning design would be hung in Times Square.

With my design, I figured that the radio had such a simple and iconic shape so it seemed natural to translate that into the visual language of the billboard. Ultimately my design was shortlisted, but did not win. I guess simple isn’t always better.
